A River Overflows. Lives Are Shattered.
In September 2023, the Baro River in Gambella, Ethiopia overflowed after heavy rainfall. The flooding destroyed homes, damaged schools and churches, and cut off clean water supplies. Families were forced into temporary shelters — schools, churches, relatives' homes — with nowhere safe to call their own.
The situation was dangerous. Crocodile attacks. Repeated flooding. Children unable to attend school or simply play outside without fear.
121 families lost everything.

What Your Purchase Did
Compassion Canada responded by funding the reconstruction of permanent homes for 121 flood-affected families across six centres in Gambella. Every planned home was completed — structurally safe, durable, with proper living spaces and internal partitions that gave families back their dignity.
A retention wall was also built at one of the centres to reduce future flood risks and ensure children could safely access the programs and support they depend on.
Local contractors were hired. Communities came together. And families who had been living in temporary shelters moved into permanent, safe homes.

A Little Girl Named Nyabora
One of the families who received a new home includes a young girl named Nyabora. In her own words:
